One of our objectives here at Cradle My Heart is advancing the pregnancy help community–because they offer a true choice to women facing unplanned or unwanted pregnancy.

So it was extremely heartening to see the New York Times publish The Women the Abortion War Leaves Out for their Sunday magazine this week. The op-ed by Michelle Oberman is an evenhanded and positive op-ed on a pregnancy help center in Oklahoma.

Oberman spent time at Birth Choice of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City and reported on the work the staff and volunteers do there to help women be heard and find the care and support they need to see an unplanned pregnancy through.

While Oberman declares herself committed to abortion rights, it is clear that she no longer sees the pregnancy help community as villians at war with women over their freedoms.

Much of the credit for her awakening to the compassion and care embodied in pregnancy help work goes to Birth Choice Executive Director, Barbara Chishko. For over four decades Chishko has led the organization in helping women see beyond their current economic pressures which are the driving factor in the majority of abortion decisions.

And although Oberman gave some credence to reports of “false and misleading practices” and other allegations against pregnancy centers, her experience at Birth Choice debunked that story line entirely.

One of the most striking things about the meeting of the minds which took place in Oklahoma is the discovery of common ground when we step beyond our pre-conceived perceptions of the labeling on all sides.

Joining us this Sunday Barbara Chishko, Executive Director of Birth Choice will talk about the article and her work in the pregnancy help community.
