Choosing life means choosing joy

Cradle My Heart Today | Leslies’s story 11-20-17

Leslie Fields was a 43-year-old college professor when she faced an unexpected pregnancy. Listen now:

After saying yes to her fifth child, another surprise child quickly followed.

Her work colleagues were unsympathetic to her dilemma, while church friends wondered why there was any dilemma at all.

Feeling alone and isolated, Leslie says she knew that “God is the maker of life” and that she had “to find a way to receive with open hands these children He had made.”

In her book Surprise Child Leslie writes that a key to joy came as she realized her surprise children were no surprise to God and that He would supply her family with everything they needed, including the strength and joy to love two more children.

Our world seems to differ. Children may be seen as an impediment, a hindrance, and some may even say a curse, wrongly envisioning the young one a parasite in the mother’s womb. And more than half of women who choose abortion are already married with kids.

Leslie understood that, beyond choosing life, she must choose joy. What if we began to see each child in the bouquet of blessings leading to a more beautiful life?

The Bible says children are a gift from God (Psalms 127:3), and:

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. ( James 1:17)
