Filmmakers Ann McElhinney and Phelim McAleer are outspoken about the challenges of presenting their true-crime drama about abortionist Kermit Gosnell and the media cover-up of his case.

Gosnell was convicted in 2013 of three counts of first-degree murder of infants in illegal late-term abortions, and one count of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Karnamaya Mongar, who died of an overdose of sedatives. He is now serving life without parole.

At the time of the trial, abortion proponents cast Gosnell as an outlier. New evidence presented after a Senate investigation into abortion practices in the US shows that Gosnell was not an aberration. The Gosnell Movie casts this story as a true-crime drama. Portraying Gosnell as America’s biggest serial killer illustrates a much wider problem hidden behind media complacency or complicity.

When we spoke with Phelim McAleer in 2013 about his experience attending the Gosnell trial, he stated that he had been pro-choice going into the experience. These filmmakers were not pro-life, nor did they especially like pro-life activists. The people telling this story had their hearts pierced by the truth and they cannot keep quiet as a result.

Ann returns to Cradle My Heart Radio February 5 to talk about the profound impact the case has had on her personally, and the release of their new book Gosnell: The Untold Story of America’s Most Prolific Serial Killer.
