Baylor University Professor Francis Beckwith joins us on the Cradle My Heart Radio podcast
Professor Beckwith makes a strong moral and legal case against abortion choice. His approach centers on the idea of human inclusiveness:
If the unborn are fully human from conception forward, it is morally wrong to kill them, since they are members of the human community.
The logic of the pro-life position wins on the merits of the argument. In other words, this is not an appeal to religion, or to emotion, or to personal liberty, or to any of the other reasons routinely argued as a premise for abortion rights.
Since the unborn are human they are valuable in every way that humans are valuable after being born.
Starting from that premise means we are obliged to protect and defend, rather than exploit their weak and vulnerable state. And it means that we must step up and help women who are vulnerable to exploitation by an abortion industry only too happy to profit from an unexpected or untimely pregnancy.
Arguing for human inclusiveness is an argument for the dignity of women as well. Women deserve support and care while pregnant and throughout the journey of mothering their young. The pregnancy help movement upholds these values and the women they serve. The church should be doing likewise, as together we make abortion unthinkable.
Human inclusiveness demands nothing less.
