In Waiting on God, What to Do When God Does Nothing Wayne Stiles says, “We want to know God’s plan so that we can trust the plan–but often God hides his plan so that we will trust him.”

Based on the Old Testament story of Joseph, here’s help on how to find comfort and purpose in the waiting, revealing the startling truth that sometimes when we think we are waiting on God, he is actually waiting on us. This is a wise and practical guide to finding hope and peace in life’s difficult pauses.

Learning to wait well has such a strong application for those of us who find ourselves living for years and years in the aftermath of abortion. We’re waiting to feel forgiven, we’re waiting for some sign that God has not rejected us for our act of rejecting the life he placed within us, we’re waiting for it finally to feel safe to let the truth out with those who love us yet still don’t know that secret in the past.

We’re waiting.

I really appreciate the transparency in this work. Wayne’s family dysfunction set him up to believe that no one cared about his needs, and there was no value in waiting around for help. Self-reliance was the key. That mindset was definitely what made me vulnerable to abortion when I lacked social support to make a better choice.

Whatever your circumstances, Waiting on God demonstrates that waiting is a something, not a nothing; it is active, not passive; and it is hard to sustain, not just another way of quitting when the going gets too rough.
