May is Mental Health Awareness month. And while it’s true that major mental illness may require medical interventions, we all play a role in our own mental wellbeing. The choice to nurture your spiritual life is a key component to healthy functioning, especially after abortion. Finding support matters.

God’s word also has so much to say to us about our hearts and the workings of our emotions. And as followers of Jesus Christ we have the transcendent truth to guide us when our emotions may lead us down painful paths. Gaining control of our thoughts is critical to maintaining peace with the past.

Allison Bottke’s new book is meant to help develop that skill and more.

In Setting Boundaries with Negative Thoughts and Painful Memories, How to Stop Hoarding your Hurts, Allison illustrates how violated boundaries in childhood can set up a lifetime of self-defeating thoughts and behaviors. We all need boundaries–the safety of physical space free from intrusion, but also the boundaries against external criticism or abuse; internal responses to your emotions; and boundaries that keep us from anxiously traveling too far backward or forward in time. Through sharing her own story of trauma and abuse in her childhood and as a young adult, Allison poignantly demonstrates the life-altering power of changing our thoughts about those difficult beginnings.

The good news is that it’s possible to replace negative thoughts and obsessive thinking with biblical hope. It’s possible to transform relationships with healthier thinking. And anyone can follow her six concrete steps to SANITY:

S = STOP enabling, STOP blaming yourself, and STOP the flow of money
A = Assemble a support group
N = Nip excuses in the bud
I = Implement rules/boundaries
T = Trust your instincts
Y = Yield everything to God
