Lauren is a young birthmother who is transforming church culture through her witness.
Aggieland Pregnancy Outreach told Peace magazine Lauren’s story of choosing open adoption after an unplanned pregnancy.
But Lauren says, “Once people heard about my plan for adoption, my parents fielded a flood of inappropriate questions from the ‘good church people.’
- “How could you allow your daughter to give away your own flesh and blood?”
- “Don’t you love your grandchild? Why don’t you raise him yourself?”
- “If your daughter didn’t want her baby, why didn’t she just get an abortion?” (Yes, that one also came from church!)
Lauren suggests we learn to offer support, empathy, and love to both the birthmothers and the grandparents.
Are we as Christians who oppose abortion willing to go the extra mile? Or do we shun and shame single mothers, and judge those who choose adoption? Most teen birthmothers who choose open adoption are choosing to give their children the blessing of a father and mother in a stable family home in a sacrifice for the child’s ultimate benefit.
Romans 5:8 says, “God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Even when a young woman has sinned to bring about an unwed pregnancy, we are called to love her with a Christlike love, giving acceptance, care, and support.
