Fast Fact 1: President Trump upholds his promise to nominate a pro-life justice to the SCOTUS
Filling the vacancy on the Supreme Court with a conservative motivated many who voted for Trump last November. Trump’s nominee Neil Gorsuch gathered near unanimous support from pro-lifers, as well as writers in the NY Times, and Washington Post (Princeton prof Robert George, former guest on Cradle My Heart Radio).
The Dems, not so much.
Fast Fact 2: Republicans override Dem boycott of hearing on Cong. Tom Price for Secretary of the Dept. of Health and Human Services
When Democrat members of The Senate Finance Committee boycotted hearings on Congressman Tom Price (R-GA) for a second day, Committe Chair Orrin Hatch (R-UT) took swift action. Committee rules require at least one Democrat be present for the panel to vote to send a nominee to the Senate floor. According to CNN: “Hatch (R-UT), pointed to the “extraordinary circumstances” surrounding the gathering and allowed the Republicans in the room vote to suspend the rules of the committee. With the committee rules suspended, the 14 Republicans in the room voted to move the Mnuchin and Price nominations to the full Senate, even without the presence of a single member of the opposite party. Hatch said the Senate Parliamentarian had approved of the procedural maneuver, and insisted to reporters after the exercise was a “just utilization” of the rules. “This is all approved by the Parliamentarian,” he said. “I wouldn’t have done it if it hadn’t been.””
Senate Republicans have introduced two bills to defund Planned Parenthood, redirecting federal funds away from America’s largest abortion business to other health care providers.
Meanwhile, Live Action is investigating PP’s use of ultrasound. Ultrasound technology equals state of the art care for pregnancy and childbirth. But Live Action’s latest investigation alleges Planned Parenthood only offers ultrasound in connection with their abortion business. They present evidence that 68 PP locations stated they only offer ultrasound for abortion services, and only 3 locations said they could check the health of the baby. They also offer testimony from several former PP workers about the use of ultrasound for abortion only.
Fast Fact 4: You cannot be pro-life and pro-choice
The panel on The View gave some attention to the March for Life, but rather than talking about the ideas presented there, or even about the topic of abortion, they engaged in wordplay. Sarah Haines asserted that “No one is pro-abortion.” (Tell that to those who spin abortion as a societal good because it gives women agency.) Then Whoopi and Joy Behar asserted they were “for life” and “for choice.” This is where pro-life apologetics is crucial (see here). “Choice” arguments center on the unproven assumption the unborn is not a human life equally deserving of protection and dignity.
Such flawed logic is so prevalant that it bears repeating: when someone assumes “life” doesn’t include children before their birth, it is up to them to offer evidence. If people want to divert the discussion about what abortion is and does into a rabbit trail about labels, help to clarify by asking and answering: What is the unborn? Science says an embryo is a human life: we are all full human beings from conception forward. As Greg Koukl argues: if they aren’t fully human we need no justification for killing them, but if they are fully human no such justification exists.
Fast Fact 5: Mia Love inspired the nation to a higher call: to care for the youngest members of the human family
“Every time we kill a child, all of us suffer. We lose a little of ourselves and a whole lot of our future. We strip a child from their God-given potential when we, as a society, accept abortion as health care. My fellow Americans, we cannot accept what might have been. We won’t know what might have been if we allow an organization to convince our pregnant women that they have no choice but to abort the life and the potential within them.” – Congresswoman Rep. Mia B. Love
The Final Take: As followers of Jesus Christ we know the end of the story, and we can afford to be gracious, even in the face of deceptions, foolishness and apparent setbacks. But we cannot be complacent in the face of abortion, the intentional killing of innocent human beings. Do not be dismayed. Pray for the women hurt by abortion who have buried it so deep they can’t express their pain directly but now spend their lives leading other women down that deadly path. Pray for our leaders. Keep speaking truth.
